Section 1: Introduction

The introduction begins the march and is usually about 4-16 measures long. This introduction sets the mood, tempo, and key signature for the piece.

Section 2: First Strain

The first strain is where the original main melody is established. The first strain is usually repeated twice, where the second repeat adds a countermelody.

Section 3: Second Strain

The second strain is where new material and a new melody is introduced. This section is usually played at a softer dynamic to display contrast and bring excitement to the next section. This section is usually repeated twice.

Section 4: Trio

The trio is considered the climax or center of the march. There is a new melody established along with a noticeable key signature change, along with a change in dynamic level. The traditional form establishes the trio section at 32 measures long.

Section 5: Break-Strain

The break-strain is a harsh musical interruption to break-up the trio section and cause some tension before the second repeat of the trio section.

Section 6: Trio Recap/Finale

The final recap of the trio with some added countermelodies, and modifications.
