Explain- Practice of Science

Introduction

Does the word science make you think of high-tech labs and researchers in white coats? This is often an accurate image of science but not always. If you look up science in a dictionary, you would find that it comes from a Latin word that means “having knowledge.” However, this isn’t an adequate definition either. Using what you have learned from this lesson, can you explain what science is?

What is Science?

Throughout this lesson you have engaged in activities that were designed to increase your understanding of exactly what science is. Now it is your turn to demonstrate what you have learned. Review the activities and reflect what you have learned and write an essay that explains to your classmates your understanding of what science is. Your essay must address the following:

What are the characteristics of science?
How does science differ from pseudoscience?
What are scientific methods?
How is science used in making decisions?
How does political, social, and economic issues affect science and vice versa?
